Yalumba The Menzies 2006
"The finest young Menzies Cabernet that I can recall, this sports the understated poewr and structure of the 2006 vintage as well as impressive winemaking polish. Plenty of dark berries and cassis fruits, dark olives and cherries - the palate has an engaging interplay between poise and power, impeccably focused from start to finish."
Nick Stock, "Top50 South Australian Wines" Sumptuous magazine (Aus), Dec/Jan 2009
95 points - "This is serious: coal dust and fruitcake - emphatic cabernet sauvignon. Flake tobacco too. Has plenty of deep fruitcake and chocolate in the mouth, and sparkly currants. Slides across the tongue while the tannins are long, firm, mouth-watering."
Tim White, The Australian Financial Review, 4-6 December 2009
"A stylish Coonawarra cabernet with some finesse. Scented with a fresh, sweet perfume of small red and black berries backed by lightly smoky cedar/vanilla oak and dusty nuances of dried herbs, it's fresh and pristine, presenting true elegance and balance. Long and supple, its pristine palate of vibrant fruit and tight-knit oak are supported by a firmish but pliant spine of chalky tannin, finishing with pleasing focus and a hit of cooked cranberry."
Jeremy Oliver, The Australian Wine Annual 2010
94 points - "The big gun in Yalumba's Coonawarra arsenal, this shows the same regal, poised fragrance with cedary, earthy nuances, black olive and dark cherry, cassis and fresh berries. Terrific intensity on the palate with a swathe of tannin pushing strong through the middle, some gently spicy oak sweetness too, but it rides on fresh, pristine and focused cassis flavour, finishing with verve and drive."
Nick Stock, The Penguin Good Australian Wine Guide 2010
96 points - "A deep and concentrated bouquet of ripe cassis fruit, earth, violets, a touch of mint and well-handled spicy oak; the palate is multi-layered, with great depth and precision; violets keep making their presence felt; the tannins are plentiful, but quite silky on the finish." James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion 2010
95 points - "A hat-trick for Menzies now, although I know Mattinson was not as keen on the 2004 as I was (87 points to my 94). This elicited an unsolicited comment of 'ooo this is nice' (or something along those lines) from JP, which is a sure sign we're on a winner - she's a very fussy girl after all.
Fragrant and fresh with a mix of bright small berry fruits and black cherries, dark chocolate, aniseed and mint with classy cedar oak (although it shows a tweak of vanilla nougat too, which settles down pretty quickly). It's lively and long with persistent but fine grained tannins and excellent flavour. With minor reservations about the level of acidity, the overall impression is one of balance and sophistication - a classic Coonawarra Cabernet."
